Patients in this study did not have any significant side effects. Caprylic acid is being researched as a possible treatment for essential tremor. It has currently been approved by the FDA and designated as GRAS, and is used as a food additive and has been studied as part of a ketogenic diet for treatment of epilepsy in children. They discovered that 1-octanol reduced tremor and did not have the negative side effects of ethanol. The maximum tolerated dose was not reached in this study. The study testing the effects of caprylic acid on central and peripheral tremors determined that caprylic acid reduced both.
A case-control study of 87 patients with essential tremor and 92 controls reported a mild, but significant, impairment on the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). The historical practice of grouping all action tremors together may partially explain both the difficulties in identifying genetic causes and patients’ variable responses to treatment. Blood and urine tests may also be done to determine the amount of alcohol the person has consumed, as well as any other additional drugs that may be in their system. There is no way to know if you will experience alcohol tremors after drinking, but symptoms usually start around 6 hours after your last drink, which is good to keep in mind.
Alcohol and Tremors
The decision to drink alcohol is personal, whether a person has ET or not. If one chooses to consume alcohol, it should be done in a responsible and sensible manner. The tremor is progressive, which means that it tends to become more severe over time. It can make daily activities, such as drinking from a glass, tying up shoelaces, or writing difficult. Many people with Parkinson’s disease experience tremors, but essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease are different.
Experts are still investigating possible links between the two. By Heidi Moawad, MD

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease a year ago at the age of 55. For several months I had noticed tremors in my right essential tremors and alcohol hand and the shaking of my right foot when I was sitting. Primidone is a medicine that is primarily used for epilepsy.
- Essential tremor is a nervous system condition, also known as a neurological condition, that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking.
- In this procedure, the thalamus on one side of the brain is destroyed.
- Alcohol withdrawal symptoms occur because the body relies on alcohol to function.
- You may also be referred to a doctor with a special interest and expertise in the brain and nerves (a neurologist).
- Delirium tremens is mainly characterized by tremors, hallucinations, disorientation, confusion, and increased heart rate/breathing rate/blood pressure.
It may produce a good response in up to 9 out of 10 affected people. Side-effects include loss of sensation, speech problems and weakness. These usually resolve when the stimulator settings are adjusted. If you have other symptoms then you may have a different condition.
What tests may be done to diagnose essential tremor?
Additionally, alcohol tremors may be a symptom of a more serious condition, like delirium tremens, which necessitate immediate medical attention. In order to treat alcohol tremors, you must first treat your alcohol withdrawal in a healthy and effective way. Unlike regular alcohol tremors, DT is a medical emergency and can be life-threatening if it’s not treated. DT’s are less common than regular alcohol tremors, occurring in about 5 percent of patients going through withdrawal.
- There is not an identified and consistent cause of essential tremor.
- The person has a 50% chance of having an unaffected child.
- It is important to know what kind of tremor you have because they all have different causes.
- There is good treatment available in the form of medication and occasionally surgery.
- DT’s are especially common if you do not eat enough during your drinking binge or have a long history of alcoholism.
Alcohol use may help improve the symptoms of essential tremor (ET), but using alcohol to soothe symptoms of ET is not advisable. If you are struggling with AUD, you should consider seeking medical help. Although there is no cure for alcoholism, various treatment options can help you recover. The liver is severely affected when you drink excessive amounts of alcohol. It must work harder to rid your body of toxins like alcohol than other substances.
Can Alcohol Cause Essential Tremor?
Most patients are able to tolerate the side effects, and studies have shown that 60% to 100% of patients respond positively. Propanolol blocks the stimulating action of neurotransmitters to calm your trembling. This beta blocker is effective in 40% to 50% of patients and is less useful in reducing head and voice tremor.
